What Is Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery?
Cardiothoracic surgery is a specialised field of medicine dealing with surgical procedures of the heart, lungs, chest, and blood vessels, treating conditions such as heart disease, lung disease, chest trauma, and vascular disease.

Conditions affecting the heart, chest, and major blood vessels often require a team of highly skilled and experienced surgeons working together to deliver safe, precise care. At Apex Hospitals, our dedicated Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and the latest surgical technology, offering medical care for both emergency and elective thoracic and cardiac conditions. Our care extends from coronary artery disease and heart valve disorders to congenital heart defects in children and diseases of the major blood vessels, including the aorta. Dr. Rahul Kumar Bhukar at Malviya Nagar also performs robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery, an approach that was previously available only at select centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore.

Conditions We Treat

Coronary Artery Disease

Narrowing or blockage of the arteries supplying blood to the heart, often requiring bypass surgery to restore blood flow.

Heart Valve Disease

Malfunction of one or more of the heart’s four valves, disrupting the correct direction of blood flow through the heart.

Congenital Heart Disease

Heart defects present since birth, such as Tetralogy of Fallot, which may require surgical correction in infancy or childhood.

Aortic Aneurysm

A dangerous bulging of the aorta that carries a risk of rupture or dissection, addressed through open surgical repair.

Vascular Disease (including Aorta)

Conditions affecting the blood-supplying vessels, including the aorta, requiring surgical reconstruction or repair.

Chest Trauma & Thoracic Conditions

Injuries and conditions of the chest and lungs requiring thoracic surgical intervention.

Patient Testimonials & Case Studies

Parent of a 3-Year-Old Patient

Condition: Tetralogy of Fallot (Congenital Heart Disease)

★★★★★

"Our daughter's lips and nails would turn bluish, and she struggled to breathe and feed properly. We were told she had a serious heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. Dr. Rahul Kumar Bhukar and his team explained everything clearly and gave us confidence that she was in safe hands. The surgery lasted about five hours, and she was discharged just five days later, in stable condition. Today, she is playing and feeding normally — something we weren't sure we would ever see. We are deeply grateful, and the fact that the entire treatment was covered under the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Yojana meant we never had to worry about the cost while our child's life was at stake."

Landmark Case — Congenital Heart Surgery in a 3-Year-Old Child

Condition: A three-year-old child was diagnosed with cyanotic congenital heart disease, specifically Tetralogy of Fallot — a condition involving a large hole between the two pumping chambers of the heart, along with narrowing of the blood vessel carrying blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. Due to reduced oxygenated blood supply, the child experienced bluish discolouration of the lips and nails, breathlessness, and difficulty feeding.

Treatment Given: Under the guidance of Dr. Rahul Kumar Bhukar, Consultant — Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), the child underwent intracardiac repair surgery. The defect between the chambers was closed, and reconstruction of the pulmonary valve, pulmonary wall, and artery was performed. The surgery lasted approximately five hours. The entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Chief Minister Ayushman Arogya Yojana.

Outcome: The child was discharged in stable condition on the fifth day after surgery.
