A congenital hand deformity refers to a condition where a child is born with differences in the structure or development of the hand or fingers. These differences may appear as extra or missing fingers, webbed or fused fingers, or bones that are underdeveloped. The severity can vary from very minor changes to more complex challenges that affect daily function. For many parents, noticing these differences at birth can be emotionally overwhelming, but it is important to remember that no one is to blame. These conditions are usually not inherited, cannot be prevented, and often cannot be detected during pregnancy. What matters most is early medical guidance; consulting a hand specialist at the right time can make a big difference. Depending on the condition, treatment may involve reconstructive surgery or the use of modern prosthetic devices that restore hand function and help children grow, play, and interact with the world more confidently.
Congenital hand differences can appear in many forms and are usually grouped based on the type of deformity. These may include problems with the formation of the entire arm or hand, difficulty in the separation of fingers, the presence of extra digits, or unusual growth patterns such as undergrowth or overgrowth. Some of the most common conditions are syndactyly, polydactyly, radial club hand, and cleft hand.
Syndactyly is the most frequently seen congenital hand difference. It occurs when two or more fingers are fused or when the skin between the fingers extends further than usual. In some children, the fusion involves only skin, while in others it may include bones, nerves, blood vessels, or other tissues.
Polydactyly refers to the presence of more than five fingers or thumbs. The extra digit may be attached only by soft tissue, or it may contain bones and joints. There are two main types:
In this condition, the radial (thumb-side) bone of the forearm is underdeveloped or missing. As a result, the forearm appears shortened and curved, often resembling a J-shape. The thumb may be very small or absent. Children with radial club hand may face challenges performing tasks that require the use of both hands. This condition can affect one or both arms.
A cleft hand is a rare difference where one or more central fingers are absent, leaving a deep V-shaped gap in the hand. In many cases, cleft hand occurs alongside other conditions such as syndactyly or polydactyly. Typically, the palm has a noticeable cleft, the middle fingers are missing, but the overall hand and arm bones are otherwise well-formed. This condition may occur in one or both hands and, in some cases, can also be seen in the feet.
