Overview

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure to remove a portion of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is a small organ located exclusively in men within the pelvis. Positioned between the bladder and penis, it surrounds the urethra—a tube responsible for carrying urine from the bladder to the penis. When the prostate gland enlarges, it can exert pressure on the bladder and urethra, leading to urinary symptoms. TURP Surgery in Jaipur is performed to alleviate these symptoms by removing the excess prostate tissue that is causing the obstruction.

Why is TURP done?

TURP is commonly advised when the enlargement of the prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) gives rise to bothersome symptoms that do not improve with medication.

The following symptoms are frequently alleviated through TURP:

  • Difficulties initiating urination
  • Weak urine flow or intermittent flow
  • Straining to pass urine
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Nocturia (frequent awakening during the night to urinate)
  • Sudden and urgent need to urinate
  • Inability to empty the bladder

How is TURP performed?

During a TURP procedure, a resectoscope, a slender metal tube equipped with a light, camera, and wire loop, is employed. This instrument is gently guided through the urethra, eliminating the need for any external incisions. Once the resectoscope reaches the prostate, the heated wire loop is activated using an electric current. This loop effectively removes the problematic section of the prostate that is causing urinary symptoms. To clear away the extracted prostate tissue, a catheter, and a thin tube, is inserted into the urethra. Fluid is then pumped into the bladder to flush out the removed pieces of the prostate.

To ensure a painless experience, general anaesthesia or spinal anaesthesia is administered during the procedure. This guarantees that you remain comfortable throughout.

Recovering from TURP

Operation required a hospital stay of 1 to 3 days. During your hospital stay, the catheter used during the procedure will remain in place. This is because swelling in the urethra may temporarily hinder normal urination.

Feeling tired and experiencing general discomfort for a week or two after returning home is common. While most men resume their daily activities during this time, it's essential to take it easy and let recovery period be of 4 to 8 weeks. It is advisable to refrain from work, heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, driving, and sexual activity for a few weeks.

Temporary difficulties with urination and the presence of blood in the urine for a few weeks are normal. However, if you have concerns, contacting Apex Hospitals, Jaipur, Rajasthan is recommended.

Risks

TURP is generally a safe procedure, and the likelihood of serious complications is minimal.

Temporary urinary incontinence, or a temporary loss of bladder control, is also common after the procedure. Fortunately, this usually resolves within a few weeks. In rare cases, persistent urinary incontinence may require further treatment.

Additionally, there is a small risk of other issues, such as erectile dysfunction, difficulties with urination, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). It's important to discuss any concerns or symptoms with your healthcare provider for appropriate guidance and management.
